PURPOSE: The primary purpose of this position is to instruct and supervise diverse groups of children by establishing a positive and respectful learning environment, providing ample and varied learning opportunities, and promoting high standards of performance for all students regardless of their background and developmental levels.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Meets the standards of Competent and Ethical Performance as outlined in Oregon Administrative Rules (OAR 584-020-000 to 584-020-045). The following are examples of duties. However, any one position may not cover all duties listed; examples may not cover all duties an employee is expected to perform; and other duties may be assigned.

Instruction/Supervision

• Provide instruction to students during designated times and location.
• Plan quality written lesson/unit plans that meet the individual needs, interests and abilities of students, and that reflect the use of research-proven best practices.
• Develop and carry out clear, organized and sequential lessons and learning activities suitable for students’ developmental levels and aligned with instructional objectives.

• Implement district and state curriculum standards and ensure that instructional activities are clearly related to district/state curriculum standards.
• Participate in development and implementation of individual student plans (e.g., IEP, 504).
• Assume responsibility for adapting and modifying classroom instruction for students identified as needing specialized instruction (e.g., students with IEP or 504 plans, those identified for Title I, TAG and ELL services), seeking the assistance of district specialists as needed.
• Vary and pace classroom strategies to accommodate different learning styles, actively involve students, and maximize student engagement in meaningful learning.

• Establish and clearly communicate goals and objectives to students.

• Be aware of and respect cultural diversity issues in teaching and curriculum development.

Student Achievement

• Work collaboratively with fellow educators and support service professionals to provide curriculum, instruction and activities that promote and support student achievement.
• Assess student performance and progress regularly.
• Use a variety of instructional techniques to teach concepts based on the adopted Oregon curriculum standards in order to achieve benchmarks.
• Strive to implement by instruction and action the district and building's instructional goals and objectives.
• Establish and maintain open lines of communication with students and parents/guardians concerning performance goals and student outcomes, academic and behavioral progress; this may entail being available to students and parents outside the instructional day upon request or when required to do so under reasonable terms.

• Use a variety of approaches to assess, record and provide feedback promptly and often to students on their progress and assignments.

Classroom/Learning Environment

• Create and maintain a classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate to the developmental level and interests of the students.
• Assist students in setting and maintaining appropriate classroom behavior standards.
• Plan and oversee purposeful assignments for instructional assistants/classroom volunteers.
• Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials and facilities.

• Model and teach respect with an awareness of diversity of cultures and backgrounds.
• Work effectively and collaboratively with diverse student, staff and community populations.

• Comply with applicable district, state, local and federal laws, rules and regulations.
• Assist school staff and administration in implementing all policies/rules governing student conduct, reinforce individual school’s plan for positive behavior support, develop reasonable rules for classroom behavior, and use effective, proactive behavior management skills in all school settings.

Professional Conduct/Development

• Maintain and improve one’s own professional competence.
• Maintain appropriate certifications and training hours as required.
• Attend staff meetings and district meetings and serve on committees as required.
• Attend work regularly.

• Reflect upon own teaching performance; take primary responsibility for pursuing and evaluating professional growth; and accept and use supervisory feedback.
• Participate in activities related to school functions and/or the education process that occur outside the regular workday, in accordance with the collective bargaining agreement.
• Assume responsibility for assigned duties, e.g., playground, lunchroom duty.
• Maintain competency in technology as related to job responsibilities.

• Maintain accurate, complete and correct records as required by law, district policy, and administrative regulation.

• Collect, record, store, retrieve, assimilate, organize and use information and records electronically and by traditional methods.

QUALIFICATIONS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty and responsibility as listed above satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required. • Education and Experience: Valid Oregon teacher’s license with appropriate endorsement and grade level authorization. Must be highly qualified or able to become highly qualified in area assigned according to NCLB laws. Content knowledge in subject areas taught. Familiarity with variety of age appropriate instructional, assessment and behavior management strategies that reflect current research on best practices. Familiarity with state standards and curriculum frameworks for grade levels taught. Knowledge and experience with differentiated instruction.

• Language Skills: Effective oral and written communication skills. Ability to read technical procedures and government regulations. Ability to speak effectively and effectively present information in classroom, small group and one-on-one situations to students, other district employees, patrons, administration and school board members.
• Mathematical Skills: Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios and proportions to practical situations.
• Reasoning Ability: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.
• Computer Skills: Proficient with email, word processing software, internet software, and database software.
• Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: See Education and Experience, above. Valid driver’s license. Current certification in CPR/First Aid may be required; other certificates as requested.

• Interpersonal Skills: Exhibits professionalism and effective human relations. Effectively manages and supervises students and their work. Works well with others. Focuses on solving conflict. Maintains confidentiality. Listens to others without interrupting. Keeps emotions under control. Remains open to others’ ideas. Contributes to building a positive team spirit.
